Listen to this article

The eyes of the Lord preserue knowledge, and he ouerthroweth the words of the transgressour. Proverbs 22:12 (KJV)

Context: The book of Proverbs is part of the wisdom literature in the Old Testament. It consists of practical teachings and observations about life, morality, and the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 22:12 is a single verse within this collection of wise sayings.

Preserving Knowledge: The verse begins by stating that “the eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge.” This phrase emphasises God’s role in preserving knowledge and understanding. In other words, God watches over and safeguards knowledge. This highlights the divine wisdom and omniscience of God.

God’s Care for Knowledge: The idea of God preserving knowledge suggests that God is concerned with the preservation and transmission of truth. Throughout the Bible, God reveals Himself and His wisdom to humanity through various means such as His Word, creation, and divine revelation. As believers, we can trust that God values knowledge and desires to guide us in understanding His ways.

The Fool’s Wisdom Overthrown: The latter part of the verse states that God “overthroweth his own wisdom” — though the verse actually describes the fool’s action rather than God’s direct action. The term “fool” refers to someone who lacks wisdom and acts contrary to godly principles.

The Transgressor’s Words Overthrown: The latter part of the verse states that God “overthroweth the words of the transversor.” This indicates that God opposes and brings down the words or plans of those who act against His will and go against His commands.

Application: Proverbs 22:12 serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and His interest in preserving knowledge. It encourages us to seek wisdom, understanding, and knowledge from God rather than relying solely on our own understanding. It also serves as a warning to avoid foolish behavior and to align our actions with God’s will, and to avoid transgressing God’s commands and speaking or acting in ways contrary to His will.
