Traine vp a childe in the way he should goe: and when he is olde, hee will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)

Context: Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, attributed to King Solomon. It contains practical teachings and advice for daily living. Proverbs 22:6 is a well‑known verse that focuses on the importance of proper training and guidance for children.

“Train up a child”: The word “train” in Hebrew (chanak, Strong’s H2596) means to dedicate, educate, induct, or devote. It implies setting a foundation, initiating, or molding. It refers to the comprehensive education and upbringing of a child, encompassing moral, spiritual, and practical aspects.

“In the way he should go”: This phrase emphasizes the importance of understanding a child’s individuality and unique characteristics. It involves identifying their strengths, talents, and interests, and guiding them accordingly. It also implies teaching them the ways of God and instructing them in righteousness.

“When he is old, he will not depart from it”: This part of the verse suggests that when a child is raised in the right way, with proper training and guidance, the impact will endure throughout their life. It does not guarantee that they will never stray or make mistakes, but it affirms that the values and principles instilled will leave a lasting impression, making it more likely for them to return to the right path.

Application:

Parents’ responsibility: The verse highlights the responsibility of parents, guardians, and caregivers to diligently train and guide children. It emphasizes the crucial role they play in shaping a child’s character, values, and beliefs.

Individualized approach: Recognizing the uniqueness of each child is important. Understanding their personality, strengths, weaknesses, and interests helps in tailoring the training and guidance to their specific needs.

Teaching godly principles: The verse implies the importance of teaching children about God’s ways, His commandments, and the values and principles found in Scripture. This includes modeling these principles in our own lives, being consistent, and providing a solid foundation for their spiritual growth.

Long‑term perspective: The promise in the verse does not guarantee a child’s faithfulness, but it affirms the influence of proper training. Parents should persevere in their efforts, trusting that the seeds sown will bear fruit in due time, even if there are temporary detours along the way.

Limitations: It is essential to remember that Proverbs contains general principles and observations about life, rather than rigid promises or formulas. While the verse provides valuable guidance, it does not account for the free will of individuals. Each person has the ability to make their own choices and decisions, including straying from the teachings they received.

Remember to study the Bible holistically, considering the entirety of God’s Word, and seeking wisdom and guidance from the Holy Spirit as you apply its teachings in your life.
