Bow downe thine eare, and heare the words of the wise, and apply thine heart vnto my knowledge. Proverbs 22:17 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed to King Solomon, renowned for his god‑given wisdom. It offers practical guidance for daily living, covering relationships, morality, and the many decisions we face. The opening command, “Bow down thine ear,” is an idiom that calls us to listen attentively and with humility, adopting a posture of submission that prepares the heart to receive instruction.

“Hear the words of the wise” reinforces the biblical emphasis on seeking wisdom and understanding. The verse urges the reader to pay careful attention to the counsel of those who possess experience and insight. Yet listening alone is insufficient; the phrase “Apply thine heart” demands that we internalize and put the received knowledge into practice, allowing it to shape our inner being and daily actions.

The reference to “my knowledge” points to the specific insight of the wise author of Proverbs. By heeding and applying this knowledge, we gain a foundation for wise living. The passage therefore presents four key lessons:

  • Humble and attentive listening – True wisdom begins with a heart willing to bow and receive counsel from various sources, recognizing that insight can come from many who walk in godliness.
  • Active pursuit of wisdom – The verse calls us to seek out wise counsel, study Scripture, and learn from the experiences of others, rather than waiting passively for understanding to arrive.
  • Application of wisdom – Knowledge becomes genuine wisdom only when it influences our choices, relationships, and values. A heart committed to living out these principles demonstrates the reality of wisdom.
  • Discernment in choosing sources – While the instruction encourages listening to the wise, it also reminds us to evaluate advice against God’s truth, ensuring that the counsel we adopt aligns with Scripture.

Overall, Proverbs 22:17 invites believers to approach life with humility, to earnestly seek godly insight, and to apply that insight diligently. By doing so, we navigate life’s challenges with divine perspective, honor God, and become a blessing to others.
