Proverbs 23:23

Posted on 18 May at 14:10

“Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, attributed mainly to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance and insights into various aspects of life. Proverbs 23:23 is part of a collection of sayings emphasizing the value and pursuit of wisdom.

“Buy the truth”: The verse begins with the exhortation to “buy the truth”. This phrase suggests that truth is something of great value and importance. In this context, “buying” implies investing time, effort, and resources to acquire truth. It highlights the idea that truth is not obtained easily or without effort; it requires a conscious decision to pursue and embrace it.

“Sell it not”: The verse continues with the instruction to “sell it not”, emphasizing the enduring and non‑negotiable nature of truth. Once truth is obtained, it should not be discarded, compromised, or abandoned. It is a precious possession that should be held onto and cherished.

“Also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding”: The verse goes on to mention three more valuable attributes: wisdom, instruction, and understanding. These qualities are closely related to truth and are highly esteemed in the biblical context. Wisdom refers to the ability to discern and apply knowledge in a right and just manner. Instruction signifies the teachings and guidance necessary for moral and ethical living. Understanding denotes insight and comprehension of deeper truths and principles.

Application:Proverbs 23:23 encourages believers to prioritise and pursue truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding in their lives.

Here are a few applications:

Invest in the pursuit of truth: Seek knowledge, study Scripture, and engage in meaningful conversations that promote understanding of God’s truth.

Hold onto truth: Do not compromise or abandon the truth in the face of challenges or pressures from the world. Stand firm in God’s Word.

Cultivate wisdom: Seek godly wisdom by applying the principles and teachings found in Scripture to daily life. Seek counsel from wise and mature believers.

Embrace instruction: Be open to correction, guidance, and teachings that help you grow in your relationship with God and in character development.

Seek understanding: Pray for insight and discernment to comprehend spiritual truths and apply them in practical ways.
