Proverbs 23:19

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

Proverbs 23:19 (KJV)

The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature, mostly written by King Solomon. These sayings give practical guidance for living rightly. Proverbs 23:19 belongs to a section where a father or mentor speaks to a young person, calling him “my son.” This family tone shows that wisdom is passed from one generation to the next through loving instruction. The address is not limited to a literal son; it applies to all who seek wisdom.

The verse begins with a command to hear. In Hebrew thought, hearing is not passive; it means paying attention and obeying. This call emphasizes receptivity and a teachable spirit, which are essential for gaining wisdom. The command “be wise” shows that wisdom is not just knowing facts. It is a deliberate pursuit and application of godly understanding. The phrase “guide thine heart in the way” uses the word heart as the center of the whole person, including thoughts, desires, and will. To guide the heart means to direct these inner parts intentionally along the right path, which is the way of the Lord. This requires ongoing choice and active engagement, not passive drift.

This verse echoes the repeated theme in Proverbs that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). It also connects with the command in Proverbs 4:23 to keep the heart with all diligence, because the heart shapes all of life. Both passages teach that wisdom must reach the inner person, not remain only in the mind. The way of wisdom is also the way of understanding, truth, and faith, as seen throughout Proverbs.

First, we must be humble and teachable. We should admit that we need guidance and be open to correction from those who are wiser. Second, we should actively seek wisdom by reading the Bible, asking for godly counsel, and learning from experience. Third, we must let wisdom shape our desires and motives, not just our decisions. This means checking our hearts regularly and turning them back to God when they wander. Finally, wisdom must be practiced. We show that we have heard by making wise choices, avoiding harmful influences, and pursuing holiness in daily life.

  • Listen with a willing heart, ready to obey.

  • Direct your inner life toward God’s will each day.

  • Let wisdom change what you love and desire.

How can I become a better listener to God’s instruction? In what areas of life do I need to guide my heart more deliberately? Am I willing to let wisdom change my desires, not just my actions? These questions help us apply the verse personally. The promise behind this command is that those who hear and guide their hearts will walk in a way that pleases God and leads to life.
