Proverbs 22:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:10

“That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature attributed mainly to King Solomon. It offers practical advice and moral guidance for living a righteous and successful life.

Certainty of the words of truth:This verse emphasizes the importance of knowing and understanding the certainty of the words of truth. In the broader context of Proverbs, the “words of truth” refer to God’s wisdom and teachings. The book encourages its readers to seek wisdom and understanding, as they lead to a prosperous and fulfilling life.

Personal knowledge and understanding:The verse encourages personal engagement with the words of truth. It’s not merely about acquiring knowledge, but about internalising and understanding the principles of wisdom. As we study the Bible and seek wisdom, we grow in our ability to discern right from wrong and make godly decisions.

Preparedness to answer:The second part of the verse highlights the importance of being prepared to answer with words of truth when others seek guidance or ask for wisdom. As we cultivate our own understanding of God’s truth, we become equipped to provide godly counsel and guidance to others. This verse reminds us of our responsibility to share the wisdom and truth we have received with those who come to us seeking guidance.

Practical application:To apply this verse to our lives, we can:

  • Study God’s Word diligently: Regularly engage in reading and studying the Bible to gain a deeper understanding of God’s truth.
  • Seek wisdom and understanding: Pray for wisdom and seek God’s guidance in every aspect of life. Embrace the principles of wisdom found in the Bible and apply them to our daily lives.
  • Share God’s wisdom: Be prepared to share the wisdom and truth of God’s Word with others when they seek guidance or counsel. Let our words be grounded in God’s truth and spoken in love.
  • Live a life of integrity: The book of Proverbs repeatedly emphasises the importance of living with integrity. As we strive to align our lives with God’s truth, we become a living testimony to the certainty and power of His words.
