Proverbs 22:20

Posted on 18 May at 15:09

“Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge?”

Context and Background:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and practical advice, traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It is known for its focus on imparting wisdom and instructing readers on how to live a godly and righteous life. Proverbs 22:20 is part of a larger section where the author reflects on the value of wisdom and encourages the reader to pay attention to his teachings.

Examination of the Verse:a) “Have not I written to thee”: The speaker, presumed to be Solomon, acknowledges his role as a writer and teacher. He is addressing the reader directly, emphasizing the personal nature of the message.

b) “excellent things”: This phrase refers to the quality and value of the teachings contained in the book of Proverbs. Solomon asserts that the counsel he has given is of the highest caliber and worth paying attention to.

c) “in counsels and knowledge”: The teachings in Proverbs encompass both practical advice (counsels) and deeper insights and understanding (knowledge). Solomon’s wisdom covers a wide range of topics, including relationships, finances, work ethics, and moral behaviour.

Key Lessons:

  • Value of Scripture:The verse highlights the importance of written teachings and their impact on our lives. The Bible, as God’s inspired Word, contains invaluable wisdom for our guidance and growth. It reminds us to treasure and study the Scriptures diligently.
  • Excellence of Godly Counsel:Solomon claims that the counsel he has provided is excellent. This points to the timeless relevance and practicality of the teachings found in Proverbs. It encourages readers to seek godly wisdom and guidance in their decision-making processes.
  • Pursuit of Knowledge and Understanding:Solomon’s mention of “knowledge” reminds us that the pursuit of wisdom is a lifelong endeavour. It encourages us to continually seek understanding, grow in knowledge, and apply it to our daily lives.

Application:

  • Study Proverbs:Dedicate time to study the book of Proverbs and gain insights into various aspects of life. Apply the practical advice found in Proverbs to your relationships, work ethic, financial decisions, and moral choices. Allow the wisdom of Proverbs to shape your character and actions.
  • Share Wisdom:Just as Solomon shared his wisdom with others, consider how you can pass on godly counsel to those around you. Share the knowledge you gain from studying Scripture and encourage others to pursue wisdom and understanding.

Remember that Proverbs is part of the larger body of Scripture, and its teachings are meant to be understood in the context of the whole Bible. May the study of Proverbs and the pursuit of godly wisdom deepen your understanding of God’s ways and guide you in righteous living.
