Proverbs 23:17

Listen to this article

“Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible, offering practical guidance for living a godly and successful life. This verse is part of a collection of sayings attributed to King Solomon, who was known for his wisdom.

Envy and Comparison:The verse begins with the command, “Let not thine heart envy sinners.” Envy is a feeling of discontent or resentment towards someone else’s possessions, qualities, or achievements. Sinners here refer to those who engage in wicked or ungodly behaviour. The verse warns against the temptation to envy or desire the seemingly prosperous or pleasurable lives of those who are not following God’s ways.

The Fear of the Lord:The verse continues with the instruction, “but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long.” The fear of the Lord is a reverence and respect for God that leads to obedience and a desire to please Him. It involves recognising God’s authority, holiness, and wisdom, which results in a life lived in accordance with His will.

Rejecting Envy:Envy can lead to dissatisfaction, bitterness, and even compromise in our own lives. By cultivating the fear of the Lord, we shift our focus from comparing ourselves with sinners to honouring and obeying God. Instead of envying their temporary gains, we understand the importance of living a life that aligns with God’s principles and purposes.

Consistency and Diligence:The phrase “all the day long” emphasises the need for continuous commitment and dedication to the fear of the Lord. It suggests that our reverence for God should permeate every aspect of our lives, not just during specific times or in certain circumstances. It requires a consistent and diligent pursuit of godliness in our thoughts, words, and actions.

Application:This verse encourages believers to guard their hearts against envy and to prioritise their relationship with God. Instead of being consumed by jealousy or longing for the sinful ways of others, we are called to remain steadfast in our fear of the Lord. This involves seeking His wisdom, following His commands, and trusting His guidance in all areas of life.

  • In summary:Proverbs 23:17 reminds us to reject the temptation to envy sinners and instead cultivate the fear of the Lord.
  • It encourages us to consistently and diligently pursue godliness, placing our trust in God rather than longing for the temporary gains of those who do not follow His ways.
  • By doing so, we align ourselves with God’s wisdom and experience the blessings of a life lived in accordance with His will.
