Proverbs 23:15

My sonne, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall reioyce, euen mine. Proverbs 23:15 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature primarily authored by King Solomon. It offers practical advice on relationships, work ethic, moral conduct, and many other aspects of daily life. The verses that precede Proverbs 23:15 warn against overindulgence in food and the company of gluttonous people (see verses 1‑3 and 6‑8), setting a broader context for the call to wisdom.

The opening address, “My son,” establishes a parental tone. The speaker is most likely a father speaking to his child, highlighting the close bond and deep concern that exists between them. In this relationship the father emphasizes the importance of a wise heart, for such wisdom brings delight to his own heart.

Wisdom, in the biblical sense, is practical knowledge and understanding that springs from the fear of the Lord (cf. Proverbs 9:10). It involves making righteous choices and living according to God’s principles. When a son demonstrates this kind of wisdom, the father experiences genuine joy and gladness. The verse therefore links the acquisition of godly insight with emotional fulfillment for the parent.

The passage also implies a significant role for the father in shaping his child’s heart. Parents are called to provide guidance, instruction, and disciplined training, encouraging their children to pursue wise decisions. This investment in character development underscores the responsibility of caregivers to nurture discernment and moral integrity.

Beyond the immediate father‑son dynamic, the verse carries broader spiritual application. All believers are invited to seek wisdom and live in accordance with God’s standards. Just as a human father rejoices when his child displays wisdom, the Heavenly Father delights in the pursuit of wisdom and righteous living by His people. Our choices and conduct have the power to bring joy to the heart of God.

Consequently, the verse serves as a clear call to pursue wisdom actively. Christians are encouraged to seek understanding, discernment, and godly knowledge through diligent study of Scripture, wise counsel, and reliance on the Holy Spirit’s guidance. By doing so, believers deepen their relationship with God and bring delight to His heart.

In conclusion, Proverbs 23:15 highlights the profound joy experienced by a father when his son possesses a wise heart. It underscores the importance of seeking wisdom, making righteous choices, and allowing that pursuit to bring joy not only to earthly parents but ultimately to our Heavenly Father.
