Proverbs 23:11

For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

Proverbs 23:11 (KJV)

This verse stands in the wisdom literature of Proverbs, a book traditionally linked to King Solomon. The surrounding passage warns against moving ancient landmarks and against taking advantage of the vulnerable, especially orphans. In that setting, the promise of a mighty redeemer gives assurance to those who have no human defender.

The word “redeemer” translates a Hebrew term for a kinsman-redeemer, a close relative who had the duty to rescue or buy back a family member from trouble. Here God Himself takes that role. He is mighty, so no oppressor can resist Him. He will “plead their cause,” meaning He will argue the case of the helpless as their advocate and judge. This is a direct warning to anyone who exploits the poor or the fatherless: they will answer to God. The Hebrew term also carries the idea of buying back, showing that God’s redemption is both powerful and personal.

Throughout the Old Testament, God reveals Himself as the Redeemer of Israel, delivering His people from bondage (see Exodus 6:6). In the New Testament, Jesus is called our advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1), and He lives to intercede for believers (Hebrews 7:25). The same God who defended the orphan in ancient Israel now defends all who trust in Christ. This connection shows that God’s care for the weak is consistent across the whole Bible.

This truth has two sides. First, it comforts those who are mistreated: God sees their suffering and will act. Second, it challenges every believer to imitate God’s heart. We are to defend the vulnerable, speak against injustice, and offer practical help to those in need. We can also bring our own burdens to Christ, confident that He pleads our cause before the Father. No oppressor is beyond God’s reach, and no victim is beyond His care.

When we feel powerless, we can rest in the strength of our Redeemer. His power is not distant; it is engaged on behalf of His people. Let this assurance shape both our trust and our actions, as we live as people who know that God Himself stands with the weak.
