Hebrews 7:25

Listen to this article

“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”

Context and Background: The book of Hebrews was written to encourage Jewish believers who were facing persecution and wavering in their faith. It presents Jesus Christ as the ultimate High Priest, superior to the Levitical priesthood and the sacrifices of the Old Testament.

Understanding the Verse:

  • “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost”:This verse emphasizes the all‑sufficiency and completeness of Jesus’ saving power. It declares that Jesus is fully capable of saving and delivering completely those who come to God through Him. The word “uttermost” signifies to the fullest extent, completely, or forever. Jesus’ work of salvation is not limited or partial but encompasses every aspect of our lives.
  • “That come unto God by him”:Jesus is the only way to approach God. Through His sacrifice on the cross, He opened the way for humanity to have a restored relationship with God. To come unto God, we need to place our faith in Jesus Christ and accept Him as our Lord and Savior.
  • “Seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them”:Jesus’ ongoing work as our High Priest is highlighted here. He is alive, resurrected, and continues to intercede on behalf of those who believe in Him. As our advocate, He presents our prayers, needs, and petitions before God the Father. His intercession ensures that we have a constant connection and access to the Father.
  • Key Themes and Lessons:
  • The sufficiency of Jesus’ salvation:This verse reminds us that Jesus’ work on the cross is more than enough to save us completely from sin and its consequences. It emphasizes the uniqueness and effectiveness of Jesus’ sacrifice, which surpasses the temporary sacrifices of the Old Testament.
  • Access to God through Jesus:The verse underscores the exclusivity of Jesus as the mediator between God and humanity. It teaches that our approach to God must be through faith in Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), and no one can come to the Father except through Him.
  • Jesus’ intercession:This verse assures believers that Jesus is actively involved in our lives. He intercedes for us, advocating on our behalf before God. This truth gives us confidence and assurance that our prayers and needs are not ignored but are presented by our loving High Priest.
