Hebrews 7:24

Listen to this article

“But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.”

Context:The book of Hebrews was written to encourage and strengthen Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and contemplating a return to Judaism. The author of Hebrews presents Jesus Christ as the superior High Priest, comparing Him to the Levitical priesthood.

Identification of “this man”:The phrase “this man” refers to Jesus Christ. The preceding verses in Hebrews 7 (specifically verse 23) establish Jesus as a permanent High Priest in contrast to the Levitical priests who were temporary and subject to death.

Continueth ever:Unlike the Levitical priests who served for a limited time due to their mortality, Jesus Christ continues forever. This emphasizes the eternal nature of His priesthood.

Unchangeable priesthood:The phrase “unchangeable priesthood” indicates the permanence and stability of Jesus’ priesthood. The Levitical priesthood was subject to change and succession as priests died and new ones took their place. However, Jesus’ priesthood is unchangeable because He lives forever, having conquered death through His resurrection.

Significance and implications:

  • Mediator between God and humanity: As an eternal and unchanging High Priest, Jesus continually intercedes on behalf of His followers before God the Father. He is the mediator who bridges the gap between sinful humanity and a holy God.
  • Perfect and complete sacrifice: Hebrews emphasizes that Jesus offered Himself as a once-for-all sacrifice for sins. His eternal priesthood ensures that His sacrifice remains eternally effective and sufficient for the forgiveness of sins.
  • Confidence and security: Knowing that Jesus is an eternal and unchanging High Priest gives believers great assurance and confidence in their relationship with God. They can trust in His constant intercession and rely on His unchanging love and grace.
  • Rejection of a return to the Levitical system: The author of Hebrews uses the superiority of Jesus’ eternal priesthood to dissuade Jewish Christians from reverting to the rituals and sacrifices of the old covenant. By emphasizing the unchangeable nature of Jesus’ priesthood, the author highlights the inadequacy of the Levitical system in achieving eternal salvation.

Overall, Hebrews 7:24 reminds us of the unique and unparalleled position of Jesus Christ as our eternal High Priest. His unchanging priesthood provides believers with confidence, security, and access to God’s grace and forgiveness.
