Proverbs 23:16
Yea my reines shall reioyce, when thy lippes speake right things. Proverbs 23:16 (KJV)
Understanding the Context: Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible, attributed primarily to King Solomon. It contains practical advice and guidance for living a righteous and successful life. Proverbs 23:16 is part of a passage where a father expresses joy in his son’s wisdom and righteous speech. Specifically, Proverbs 23:15–16 states: “My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.”
Analyzing the Verse: “Yea, my reins shall rejoice”: In biblical language, “reins” refer to the innermost parts or the seat of emotions and thoughts. Here it symbolizes the core of a person’s being, and the word “rejoice” implies joy, satisfaction, or delight. “When thy lips speak right things”: This phrase highlights the power and significance of our words. It suggests that when one speaks with integrity, truth, and wisdom, it brings joy and satisfaction to the innermost being.
Interpreting the Verse: The verse indicates that when our lips speak right things, it leads to inner joy and rejoicing. Speaking words of truth, righteousness, and wisdom brings a sense of satisfaction and well‑being within us. Our words have the ability to impact our emotions, thoughts, and overall well‑being. When we speak positively, honestly, and wisely, it not only affects others but also brings about a positive transformation within ourselves. The content and character of our speech matter; God values truthful and wise communication. Speaking “right things” aligns with God’s principles and promotes healthy relationships and personal growth.
Application: To speak right things we must cultivate wisdom by studying and understanding God’s Word, seeking His guidance, and developing discernment. Wisdom enables us to choose our words carefully, considering their impact on ourselves and others. Our speech should reflect our inner values; we must practice integrity by aligning our words with honesty, kindness, encouragement, and righteousness. The Bible frequently emphasizes the importance of controlling our speech; we should guard our tongue, avoiding gossip, deceit, and unwholesome talk, and instead let our lips be used for edification, encouragement, and truth. The joy and satisfaction derived from speaking right things come from aligning ourselves with God’s will and following His principles, developing a close relationship with God, and allowing His Spirit to guide our speech and conduct. Proverbs 23:16 encourages us to prioritize wisdom, integrity, and righteousness in our speech, so that we may experience inner joy, contribute to positive relationships, and honour God in our daily lives.
