Proverbs 24:1
Be not thou enuious against euill men, neither desire to be with them. Proverbs 24:1 (KJV)
Proverbs belongs to the biblical genre of wisdom literature and is traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical counsel for daily living, addressing righteousness, the consequences of actions, and the pursuit of wisdom. The wording quoted above does not appear in the canonical text of Proverbs; the actual verse 24:1 reads, “Be not thou wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.” Nevertheless, the theme expressed—guarding against envy and evil association—aligns with the broader teachings of the book.
Avoiding Envy: The admonition “Be not thou envious against evil men” warns against the corrosive feeling of envy, a discontent or resentment sparked by another’s possessions, qualities, or success. Envy can breed bitterness, strife, and poor decision‑making. Scripture repeatedly calls believers to cultivate contentment, gratitude, and a focus on the blessings already received, rather than coveting what others have.
Shunning Evil Company: The second clause, “neither desire to be with them,” cautions against seeking the fellowship of those who practice wrongdoing. Our relationships shape attitudes, behaviors, and spiritual direction. Companionship with wicked individuals can corrupt character, compromise values, and lead one away from the path of righteousness. Choosing companions wisely and surrounding oneself with those who encourage spiritual growth is therefore essential.
Application: From this counsel we may draw several practical steps. First, develop a heart of gratitude and contentment, regularly acknowledging God’s provision. Second, pursue godly associations—family, friends, mentors, and fellow believers who model faithful living and provide accountability. Third, exercise discernment when forming friendships, evaluating character, values, and lifestyle, while maintaining healthy boundaries with those whose conduct is harmful. Finally, deepen one’s relationship with God through prayer, Bible study, and fellowship, allowing divine wisdom to equip us against envy and the lure of evil company. By applying these principles, believers can grow in wisdom and live in accordance with God’s standards.
