Proverbs 24:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:21

For their heart studieth destruction, and their lippes talke of mischiefe. Proverbs 24:2 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament, traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical advice on character, relationships, and morality, and chapter 24 emphasizes wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.

In this verse the “heart” denotes the innermost part of a person—thoughts, desires, and motivations—while the “lips” symbolize speech, which reflects the condition of the heart.

The phrase “their heart studieth destruction” (or “devises destruction”) indicates that these individuals actively contemplate and plan harm. Their thoughts are centered on causing ruin or devastation. Likewise, “their lips talk of mischief” describes speech characterized by malicious intent, deceit, slander, and plots to cause trouble.

This verse serves as a warning against harboring destructive thoughts and engaging in harmful speech. It calls believers to examine their own hearts: are thoughts focused on building up or tearing down? Do grudges, envy, or ill intentions reside within? The passage urges the cultivation of a heart that seeks peace, love, and righteousness.

Because words have profound influence, the verse reminds us to ensure our speech aligns with godly principles, promoting goodness, truth, and encouragement rather than mischief or harm. Our integrity is reflected in the consistency between what we think and what we say.

Seeking wisdom and discernment through God’s Word and prayer transforms both heart and speech. By studying and applying biblical principles, we develop a desire for righteousness and lips that speak life‑giving words. Prayer and meditation on Scripture help guard the heart and shape speech to reflect Christ’s character.

In summary, Proverbs 24:2 warns of the danger of destructive thoughts and malicious speech. It challenges us to guard our hearts, be mindful of our words, and pursue wisdom so that our lives may edify and encourage others, reflecting the character of Christ.
