Proverbs 25:6

Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:

Proverbs 25:6 (KJV)

The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed to King Solomon. These proverbs give practical guidance for living wisely and righteously. This verse is part of a series of observations about kings and courtly behavior, later compiled by the men of Hezekiah, king of Judah (Proverbs 25:1). It advises against seeking prominence or recognition in the presence of influential people.

The verse begins with the admonition, “Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king.” The Hebrew phrase carries the idea of honoring oneself or making a splendid display that exceeds one’s station. It warns against intruding into the king’s presence rudely, being ambitious to be a courtier, or claiming a place among the great. The second part, “stand not in the place of great men,” emphasizes respecting the positions and roles of those who hold significant influence. It is a reminder not to push oneself into places meant for individuals of greater stature or authority. This caution against self-promotion is practical and timeless, applying not only to royal courts but to all areas of life.

The following verse, Proverbs 25:7, explains the motivation: it is better to be invited to come up higher than to be put lower in the presence of the prince. This principle reflects a heart of humility, a core virtue throughout Scripture. The wisdom here is practical and timeless, extending beyond royal courts to all of life. It encourages us to let others recognize our worth rather than seizing honor for ourselves.

As believers, we should cultivate humility, recognizing that pride and self-promotion have no place in the presence of authority, whether earthly or divine. We are called to respect boundaries and show deference to those who hold positions of influence. This verse teaches us to be mindful of our behavior in the presence of important figures and to be aware of our own position. By doing so, we reflect godly character and exhibit wisdom in our interactions. In everyday settings, this means avoiding bragging, not demanding attention, and waiting to be invited rather than pushing forward.

Proverbs 25:6 highlights the wisdom of knowing our place in various relationships and social settings. It teaches us to value humility, recognize authority, and exercise restraint when interacting with influential individuals. While this verse offers practical advice for social interactions, it can also be applied spiritually. We can understand the “king” and “great men” as representing God and spiritual authorities. In this sense, it encourages us to approach God and spiritual matters with humility, recognizing His authority and sovereignty. By applying these principles, we can navigate various social dynamics with grace and demonstrate our commitment to living in a manner pleasing to God.
