Proverbs 26:10

The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.

Proverbs 26:10 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a series of short sayings about fools and their behaviour. The line before it compares a proverb in a fool’s mouth to a thorn that pierces a drunkard’s hand. The line after it says that a fool returns to his folly like a dog returns to its vomit. Together these verses show that foolishness brings harm and repeats itself.

The verse begins by calling God “the great God that formed all things.” This title points to God as the Creator who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them. He is great in His nature and in the works of His hands, and He deserves praise.

The second part says that God “both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.” Here the word “rewardeth” means to repay or give what is due. God deals with each person according to their actions. A fool is one who lacks wisdom and rejects instruction. A transgressor is one who breaks God’s law. Both will receive from God what their deeds deserve, whether they sin ignorantly or wilfully.

This is not a promise that every foolish or sinful act receives its full punishment in this life. It is a statement about God’s justice. Because God is the Creator and Judge, He will certainly bring about a just outcome for every person.

Proverbs 16:4 reinforces this truth by declaring that the Lord made all things for Himself, even the wicked for the day of evil. That verse directly connects God’s creative power with His just rule over all people. The God who formed all things also governs all things fairly.

This verse calls readers to take God’s justice seriously. Since God sees and repays both foolishness and transgression, no one can assume that wrong actions will go unnoticed. It also encourages wisdom and obedience, because living under the Creator’s rule means honouring Him with our choices.

Consider whether your own words and actions reflect wisdom or folly. Remember that the same God who formed all things also knows every deed. Let this truth lead you to reverence, humility, and a sincere desire to live rightly before Him.
