Proverbs 26:26

Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.

Proverbs 26:26 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, attributed mainly to King Solomon. It gives practical teaching on moral conduct, relationships, and the pursuit of wisdom. Proverbs 26:26 warns about the outcome of concealed hatred and wickedness.

The first part of the verse describes a person who hides hatred in the heart. Such a person covers it with deceit, using false words, pretended friendship, or even exaggerated affection and strong expressions of love and esteem. Others may be fooled, but the true motive remains hostile.

The second part declares that this wickedness will be shown before the whole congregation. In ancient Israel, the congregation was the assembly of God’s people. The exposure could happen in an open court of judicature, where the deceiver would be brought, arraigned, and tried publicly. This public setting shows that God’s judgment is not hidden but open for all to see.

This verse teaches that divine justice is certain. No matter how cleverly a person conceals hatred, God sees through every disguise. The truth will come to light, and the wicked will be publicly disgraced. God ensures that hidden wickedness will be brought to light, often in a public setting.

The principle that hidden evil will be revealed appears elsewhere in Scripture. Luke 12:3 says that what is spoken in darkness will be heard in the light. This verse in Proverbs applies that same truth to hatred and deceit, showing that God’s judgment is impartial and thorough.

Believers should examine their own hearts for hidden motives. It is easy to speak kindly while holding resentment. Instead, we are called to be honest and to seek reconciliation. We must not let hatred grow or use deceit to cover it. Self-examination helps us see any hidden motives and turn from them.

This verse also brings comfort. When we suffer from another person’s hidden malice, we can trust that God will defend the truth. Injustice will not last forever, because God will expose what is done in secret. We can trust in God’s justice, knowing that evil will not ultimately prevail.

Only God can change a heart of hatred into a heart of love. Through His grace, we can be transformed and live with integrity. Let us ask Him to reveal any deceit in us and to give us courage to walk in honesty before Him and His people.
