Proverbs 27:20

Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

Proverbs 27:20 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs collects wise sayings that give practical guidance for living a godly life. This verse is a short comparison that links the insatiable nature of Hell and destruction with the eyes of man. In the Old Testament, “Hell” translates the Hebrew word Sheol, the abode of the dead, and “destruction” translates Abaddon, a place of ruin. Both are pictured as never full, always consuming and never satisfied. This picture of endless appetite sets the stage for the warning that follows.

The eyes represent human desire and appetite. Just as Sheol and Abaddon are never filled, so human desires are never satisfied. The verse warns about the endless craving of the human heart. It shows the futility of seeking satisfaction in worldly things, because the appetite of the eyes is endless. This observation about human nature is meant to lead the reader to recognize the need for wisdom and the fear of the Lord, which Proverbs presents as the foundation of a rightly ordered life. The point is not merely to describe a problem, but to call for self-examination.

The immediate context reinforces this theme. Proverbs 27:21 speaks of a man being tested by praise, and Proverbs 27:23-24 encourages diligence in caring for one’s flocks and reminds that riches are not forever. These verses together stress the fleeting nature of worldly things and the need for wise stewardship. The verse does not directly mention God’s provision, but it sets up the problem of human sin and dissatisfaction that points to the need for divine grace. This problem is not left without hope; it directs us to the only true source of satisfaction.

Reflect on your own desires, evaluating whether they are rooted in material possessions, status, or other temporary things, and consider how they align with God’s principles. Cultivate gratitude and contentment by regularly thanking God for His blessings and focusing on what truly matters in light of eternity. Seek God’s will through prayer, Scripture study, and counsel from mature believers, allowing His purposes to shape your desires and pursuits. These practices help guard against the endless cravings that the verse describes.

Contentment is not found in the accumulation of possessions or the pursuit of pleasure. A relationship with God and obedience to His principles bring true fulfilment. Instead of being driven by our own desires, we are urged to seek God’s will and align our desires with His purposes, finding lasting satisfaction in a life lived in harmony with His plan. The endless appetite of the eyes can only be satisfied when we turn to the One who gives living water.
