Proverbs 28:22

Listen to this article

“He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.”

Context:The book of Proverbs, written by King Solomon, provides practical wisdom for everyday living. It addresses various aspects of life, including relationships, work, money, and character. Proverbs 28:22 is part of a collection of proverbs that focus on wealth, greed, and the consequences of pursuing riches improperly.

Understanding the Verse:

  • "He that hasteth to be rich":This phrase refers to someone who is in a hurry or overly eager to accumulate wealth. It describes a person who is driven by a strong desire for material gain and is willing to go to great lengths to achieve it.
  • "Hath an evil eye":In biblical terms, having an "evil eye" implies a sense of greed, envy, or covetousness. It suggests a negative and selfish attitude towards wealth, where a person’s desire for riches blinds them to the potential consequences of their actions.
  • "Considereth not that poverty shall come upon him":This phrase highlights the shortsightedness of those who are solely focused on amassing wealth. They fail to recognize that their pursuit of riches without proper values and principles can lead to poverty or various negative outcomes.
  • Key Lessons:

    • Prioritizing wealth above all else:The verse warns against the unhealthy obsession with becoming rich. It cautions that when wealth becomes the primary goal without considering other aspects of life, it can lead to negative consequences.
    • The danger of greed:The reference to having an "evil eye" emphasizes the destructive nature of greed. Greed can distort one’s perspective, clouding their judgment and causing them to make poor decisions in pursuit of wealth.
  • The consequences of shortsightedness:The verse highlights the failure to consider the potential negative outcomes of a single-minded pursuit of riches. Neglecting other areas of life, such as relationships, character development, and spiritual growth, can ultimately lead to poverty in various aspects.
  • Application:

    • Balance in priorities:While it is not wrong to desire material prosperity, Proverbs 28:22 encourages us to maintain a balanced perspective. We should prioritize values such as integrity, contentment, and character over an insatiable pursuit of wealth.
    • Guarding against greed:The verse reminds us to be aware of the dangers of greed and envy. Instead, we should cultivate a spirit of gratitude and generosity, recognizing that true wealth lies not only in material possessions but also in relationships, character, and spiritual well-being.
    • Long-term perspective:It is essential to consider the long-term consequences of our actions. A short-term focus on acquiring wealth may blind us to the potential negative impacts on our lives, both in this world and in eternity.

Remember, studying the Bible involves seeking a deeper understanding of God’s wisdom and applying it to our lives. Proverbs 28:22 reminds us to pursue wealth with the right motives, keeping in mind the broader aspects of life and the potential consequences of our actions.
