“Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.”

Proverbs 3:28 (KJV) says: “Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.”

Context:The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed to King Solomon, known for his wisdom. This verse is part of a section in which Solomon provides guidance on practical wisdom and righteous living.

Concern for Neighbors:In this verse, Solomon addresses our relationship with our neighbors. He advises against postponing or withholding assistance when it is within our power to help. The instruction implies a concern for the well-being and needs of others.

Prompt Action:Solomon discourages delaying help by telling someone to go away and come back another day when we have the means to assist them immediately. This verse encourages us to respond promptly to the needs of our neighbors and to show compassion and generosity when we have the ability to do so.

The Principle of Timeliness:The verse underscores the importance of timeliness in our actions. It highlights the fact that we should not procrastinate or make excuses when we have the capacity to provide help or support. We are called to seize opportunities to be a blessing to others, acting promptly and decisively.

Responsibility and Stewardship:Proverbs 3:28 reminds us of our responsibility as stewards of the resources, blessings, and abilities that God has entrusted to us. It encourages us to use these resources wisely, not only for our own benefit but also for the benefit of others. We are called to be good neighbors, displaying kindness, generosity, and compassion.

Jesus’ Teachings:While this verse comes from the Old Testament, it aligns with Jesus’ teachings in the New Testament. In the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), Jesus teaches about showing compassion and neighborly love. The principle of promptly helping others is reiterated in Jesus’ teaching.

Proverbs 3:28 reminds us to act promptly and generously when we have the means to assist our neighbors. It encourages us to be good stewards of what God has given us and to show kindness and compassion to those in need. This verse reminds us of the importance of timely action and the responsibility we have as followers of God to be a blessing to others.
