Proverbs 3:29

Listen to this article

“Devise not evil against thy neighbor, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, written primarily by King Solomon. It contains practical advice for living a godly and successful life, addressing various aspects of human behaviour and relationships.

Neighborly Conduct:The verse highlights the importance of maintaining positive relationships with our neighbours. It admonishes against devising evil or harm towards them. Instead, it encourages treating them with kindness, respect, and consideration.

Integrity in Relationships:The phrase “seeing he dwelleth securely by thee” suggests that the neighbour referred to in this verse is someone who lives nearby or in close proximity. The idea is that our neighbours should feel safe and at ease living alongside us. The verse encourages us to refrain from scheming or plotting evil against them, emphasising the importance of integrity and trustworthiness in our relationships.

The Call to Virtue:This verse aligns with the broader teachings of Scripture, which emphasise the importance of love, compassion, and righteousness in our interactions with others. Jesus Himself emphasised the command to love our neighbours as ourselves (Mark 12:31), which encompasses treating them with fairness, honesty, and goodwill.

Practical Application:The verse challenges us to examine our attitudes and actions towards our neighbours. It reminds us to avoid harmful intentions, such as envy, jealousy, or seeking revenge. Instead, we should strive to foster an environment of peace, unity, and cooperation within our communities.

  • Extending the Principle:While the verse specifically refers to our neighbours, the principle can be applied to all relationships. It encourages us to avoid ill intentions or actions towards anyone with whom we interact. We are called to promote harmony, seek reconciliation, and demonstrate Christ-like love in all our dealings.
