Proverbs 3:31

Listen to this article

“Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature found in the Old Testament. It contains practical advice for living a righteous and successful life. The book was primarily written by King Solomon, known for his wisdom, and it addresses various aspects of life, including relationships, work, wealth, and morality.

Understanding the verse:Proverbs 3:31 warns against envy and adopting the ways of oppressors. Envy is the feeling of discontent or resentment aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities, or success. The oppressor refers to those who use their power or influence to exploit and mistreat others. The verse advises against desiring to be like oppressors and choosing their methods, as it goes against godly principles.

  • Key teachings:
  • Rejecting envy:Envy is a destructive and negative emotion. Instead of desiring what others have, the Bible encourages contentment and gratitude for one’s own blessings (Exodus 20:17; Philippians 4:11-12). Envy leads to bitterness and can hinder our relationship with God and others.
  • Rejecting the ways of oppressors:The Bible consistently condemns oppression and mistreatment of others (Exodus 22:21-24; Isaiah 1:17). Choosing the ways of oppressors goes against God’s command to love our neighbours as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). We are called to pursue justice, mercy, and righteousness (Micah 6:8) rather than exploiting or mistreating others.

Application:

  • Gratitude and contentment:Cultivate an attitude of gratitude by recognising and appreciating the blessings in your own life. Instead of being envious of others, focus on what you have and how you can use it for good. This promotes a more positive outlook and fosters contentment.
  • Pursue righteousness:Strive to live a life that reflects God’s character. Seek justice, show mercy, and act with integrity. Avoid any actions or attitudes that could harm or oppress others. Treat everyone with respect, fairness, and love.
  • Seek God’s guidance:Trust in the Lord’s wisdom and guidance in all situations. Pray for discernment to make choices that align with His will. When faced with temptations to envy or compromise with oppressive ways, rely on God’s strength and follow His path.

Remember, the teachings in Proverbs are meant to guide us in living a life that honours God and promotes harmony and righteousness in our relationships. By rejecting envy and the ways of oppressors, we can cultivate a spirit of contentment, pursue justice, and align our lives with God’s principles.
