Proverbs 3:32
“For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.”
Context: The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed to King Solomon. It provides practical advice for living a godly and successful life. Proverbs 3:32 is part of a larger passage where Solomon exhorts his readers to embrace wisdom, avoid envy, and trust in the Lord.
The Froward is an Abomination to the Lord: The term “froward” refers to someone who is perverse, obstinate, or deceitful in their ways. Such behavior is detestable to the Lord because it goes against His character of truth, righteousness, and integrity. God desires honesty, humility, and obedience from His people.
The Secret with the Righteous: The latter part of the verse speaks of God’s secret being with the righteous. This “secret” can be understood as God’s intimate knowledge, counsel, and guidance that He shares with those who walk in righteousness. It signifies a close relationship with God and the blessings that flow from it.
Implications for Believers: a. Avoid Frowardness: As followers of God, we are called to avoid frowardness in our words, actions, and attitudes. We should strive for integrity, honesty, and humility in all aspects of our lives. Frowardness hinders our relationship with God and can lead to negative consequences.
b. Embrace Righteousness: The verse emphasizes that God’s secret is with the righteous. This highlights the importance of pursuing righteousness and aligning our lives with God’s principles. When we walk in righteousness, we open ourselves up to experiencing the fullness of God’s blessings and receiving His guidance.
c. Seek Intimacy with God: The notion of God’s secret being with the righteous suggests a deep and personal relationship with Him. As believers, we should prioritize spending time in prayer, studying His Word, and seeking His guidance. When we cultivate intimacy with God, He reveals His wisdom, plans, and purposes to us.
Application:
- Cultivate Righteousness: Strive to live a life of integrity, honesty, and obedience to God’s commands. Seek to align your actions and attitudes with His will.
- Avoid Frowardness: Guard your words and actions, avoiding deceitfulness, obstinacy, and perversity. Instead, choose to be upright, honest, and humble in all your dealings.
- Seek God’s Guidance: Spend time in prayer and study of the Scriptures to deepen your relationship with God. Seek His guidance in all areas of your life, trusting in His wisdom and direction.
In summary, Proverbs 3:32 encourages believers to avoid frowardness, which is detestable to the Lord, and instead pursue righteousness. It highlights the blessings and intimacy that come from walking in righteousness, as God shares His secrets with the righteous. As believers, we are called to cultivate integrity, avoid deceit, and seek God’s guidance in all aspects of our lives.
