Proverbs 30:4

Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?

Proverbs 30:4 (KJV)

Proverbs 30 records the sayings of Agur, a wise man who speaks with humility before God. His words form a wisdom poem that contrasts human weakness with divine power. In this verse, Agur asks a series of rhetorical questions. Each question expects the same answer: only God can do these things.

The first question, “Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended?” shows that no human can move between earth and heaven at will. Only God rules over both realms. The next question, “Who hath gathered the wind in his fists?” pictures God holding the invisible and powerful wind in His hands. Then, “Who hath bound the waters in a garment?” describes God setting limits for the seas, as He did at creation. The question, “Who hath established all the ends of the earth?” declares that God alone created the world and sustains its farthest corners.

The final question, “what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?” goes deeper. Agur asks not only about God’s power but about His identity. No human can fully name or understand God. Yet the mention of a son points forward to the New Testament revelation of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who came from heaven to earth. This connection shows that the God who is beyond our reach chose to reveal Himself through His Son.

These questions call us to humility. We cannot control the wind or the seas, and we cannot climb to heaven. Instead of trying to master God, we are invited to trust Him. When we face mysteries in life, we can rest in the truth that God’s power and wisdom are far greater than ours.

Agur’s words inspire reverence. They remind us that God is both transcendent and personal. He is the Creator who holds all things, and He is the Father who sent His Son. Our proper response is worship and humble faith.
