Listen to this article

“She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.”

Context:The passage is a part of the well-known chapter in the book of Proverbs that describes the qualities and virtues of an excellent wife, often referred to as the "virtuous woman" or the "woman of noble character." This passage emphasizes her diligence, wisdom, and resourcefulness.

Considereth a field:The virtuous woman is depicted as a careful and prudent manager. She takes time to evaluate and consider the potential of a field before making a decision. This suggests that she exercises wisdom and good judgment in her business dealings.

Buyeth it:Once the woman has assessed the field and recognized its value, she takes action by making a purchase. This implies that she has financial means and is involved in commercial activities, such as real estate transactions.

With the fruit of her hands:This phrase indicates that the virtuous woman’s investments and business ventures are successful. The "fruit of her hands" represents the proceeds or profits she has earned through her hard work and diligent efforts. It suggests that she has the ability to generate wealth and is resourceful in her pursuits.

She planteth a vineyard:Having acquired the field, the virtuous woman puts it to productive use by planting a vineyard. Planting a vineyard requires time, effort, and patience, as it takes several years for the vines to mature and yield a harvest. This further highlights the woman’s industrious nature and her long-term vision for financial stability and prosperity.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Diligence and wisdom:The passage encourages us to exercise diligence and wisdom in our financial endeavors. Just as the virtuous woman carefully considers her options before making a purchase, we should approach our financial decisions with discernment, seeking God’s guidance and considering the long-term implications.
  • Resourcefulness:The passage demonstrates the importance of being resourceful and making the most of the opportunities that come our way. The virtuous woman utilizes her skills and abilities to generate wealth and create a prosperous future. We can learn from her example by being proactive, using our talents, and exploring avenues to improve our financial situation.
  • Planning for the future:The virtuous woman’s investment in a vineyard reflects her foresight and willingness to make long-term investments. Similarly, we should cultivate a mindset of planning and preparing for the future, whether it be in our finances, relationships, or spiritual growth. Prudent planning helps us to be good stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us.
  • Faithfulness and perseverance:Planting a vineyard requires patience and perseverance. We should not be discouraged by the time it takes for our investments to bear fruit. Instead, we should remain faithful and committed, knowing that God’s timing is perfect. We can trust Him to bring about the desired outcomes in due season.
