Proverbs 31:17
“She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.”
This verse is a part of the well-known passage known as the "virtuous woman" or the "excellent wife" passage in Proverbs 31:10-31. It describes the qualities and actions of a noble and virtuous woman.
"She girdeth her loins with strength":The phrase "girdeth her loins" refers to the practice of tightening or cinching up the garments around the waist to prepare for physical activity. In the context of this verse, it speaks of the woman’s readiness and preparedness to face her daily responsibilities and tasks. It emphasizes her inner strength, determination, and resilience.
As followers of Christ, we are also called to be spiritually prepared and equipped for the challenges we may encounter. This involves putting on the whole armor of God as described in Ephesians 6:10-18, which includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. By being spiritually equipped, we can stand firm against the schemes of the enemy and fulfill our calling in Christ.
"And strengtheneth her arms":This phrase signifies the woman’s commitment to physical strength and endurance. It suggests that she engages in activities that require physical exertion, possibly manual labor or other tasks that demand effort. By strengthening her arms, she is capable of carrying out her responsibilities effectively and efficiently.
As believers, we are reminded that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). While physical strength is not the ultimate measure of our worth or spirituality, we are encouraged to take care of our bodies and maintain good health. By doing so, we can be better equipped to serve and honor God in various aspects of our lives.
In a broader sense, this verse teaches us about the importance of being diligent and proactive in our daily lives. The virtuous woman depicted in Proverbs 31 is industrious, resourceful, and fully engaged in her responsibilities. She sets a positive example for us to follow, encouraging us to approach our work and duties with dedication and excellence.
Ultimately, Proverbs 31:17 reminds us that strength and readiness, both physical and spiritual, are valuable attributes in fulfilling our God-given responsibilities. By relying on God’s strength, equipping ourselves spiritually, and being diligent in our actions, we can live out our purpose and bring glory to God in all that we do.
