Proverbs 31:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:09
Listen to this article

“Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.”

Context:Proverbs 31 is often referred to as the "Virtuous Woman" chapter. It is a passage that King Lemuel’s mother taught him about the qualities of an excellent wife. In the previous verses, Lemuel’s mother advised him against indulging in wine or strong drink, which leads to impaired judgement.

Warning against the misuse of alcohol:In Proverbs 31:5, the verse serves as a warning about the dangers of drinking to excess. It emphasises the negative consequences that can arise when those in positions of authority or responsibility consume alcohol to the point of forgetting or disregarding the law and distorting justice.

Upholding justice and protecting the vulnerable:The latter part of the verse highlights the importance of maintaining sound judgement, especially when dealing with the afflicted or those in vulnerable positions. By perverting judgement, one not only violates the law but also adds to the suffering of those already burdened.

Application for individuals:On a personal level, Proverbs 31:5 teaches us to exercise self-control and moderation when it comes to alcohol consumption. It serves as a reminder that excessive drinking can impair our judgement and lead us astray from God’s law, causing harm to ourselves and others.

Application for leaders:In a broader sense, this verse carries a significant message for those in positions of authority, leadership, or decision-making roles. It underscores the importance of maintaining integrity, upholding justice, and treating the afflicted with fairness and compassion. Leaders are urged to avoid any behaviour, including the misuse of alcohol, that may compromise their ability to administer justice and protect the rights of those in need.

Connections to other biblical principles:Proverbs 31:5 aligns with several other passages in the Bible that warn against drunkenness and highlight the need for wisdom and righteous judgement. For example, Ephesians 5:18 cautions believers not to be controlled by wine but to be filled with the Holy Spirit, while Proverbs 31:9 implores us to speak up for those who are defenceless and in need of justice.
