Proverbs 4:19

The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

Context

Proverbs is wisdom literature in the Old Testament, traditionally linked to King Solomon. In Proverbs 4, a father urges his son to hold fast to wisdom and avoid the path of the wicked. Verse 19 stands in direct contrast to verse 18, where the righteous path shines brighter and brighter until full daylight. The wicked, however, walk in darkness, unable to see what trips them.

Meaning

Darkness here is a picture of moral confusion, ignorance, and spiritual blindness. It means being cut off from the light of God’s truth and righteousness. The wicked do not know what they stumble at because sin blinds them to the very dangers that threaten them. They fall into sin, error, and ruin without understanding why. Their ignorance is not innocent; it comes from rejecting God’s wisdom and choosing their own way.

Biblical connections

This verse echoes the wider teaching that sin deceives and enslaves. The wicked stumble at the Word of God because they do not know it, and they stumble at Christ because they have no knowledge of Him. They are also caught in the traps of the world and the temptations of Satan, which they do not perceive. The only remedy is to walk in the light of wisdom and righteousness, as the whole chapter urges. The contrast is stark: the righteous have the light of life, while the wicked stumble in darkness.

Application

This verse warns us to examine our own path. We may think we see clearly, but if we reject God’s truth, we become blind to the pitfalls ahead. Sin often looks attractive, yet it leads to destruction.
