Proverbs 4:8

Listen to this article

Exalt her, and shee shall promote thee: shee shall bring thee to honour, when thou doest imbrace her. Proverbs 4:8 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament, traditionally associated with King Solomon. It offers practical teachings on relationships, morality, work, and the pursuit of wisdom. In this verse the writer urges readers to exalt wisdom and to embrace her, promising that doing so will lead to promotion, honor, and success.

Understanding the metaphors helps us grasp the depth of the promise. “Her” refers to wisdom personified as a female, a common image throughout Proverbs that presents wisdom as a valuable and desirable attribute. To “exalt her” means to elevate wisdom to a place of highest priority in our lives, giving it the reverence it deserves. To “embrace her” conveys a wholehearted acceptance, integrating wisdom into our thoughts, decisions, and actions.

The benefits of honoring wisdom are threefold. First, wisdom promotes the individual; by acquiring and applying it we position ourselves for advancement. Second, wisdom brings honour, as wise choices earn respect and a good reputation among others. Third, embracing wisdom leads to recognition; people are drawn to those who possess discernment and often seek their counsel.

Application of this teaching is straightforward. Pursue wisdom actively by studying God’s Word, seeking counsel from mature believers, and developing discernment through prayer. Prioritise wisdom by making it the central guide in every decision, turning to godly principles whenever challenges arise. Embrace wisdom by aligning thoughts, attitudes, and actions with its insight, allowing it to shape relationships, responses, and life choices.

Ultimately, true wisdom comes from God. Believers are encouraged to seek wisdom from Him, for He is the source of all knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:6). The book of Proverbs contains many verses that explore wisdom’s benefits; studying the entire collection provides deeper insight into living wisely and experiencing the blessings that wisdom brings.
