Proverbs 5:5

Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

Context

Proverbs 5 is a father’s warning to his son about the dangers of adultery. The “her” in this verse is the forbidden woman whose speech is smooth but whose end is bitter (Proverbs 5:3-4). The chapter urges the reader to stay far from her and to find joy in a faithful marriage (Proverbs 5:8, 15-20).

Meaning

“Her feet go down to death” uses the image of walking to describe the course of life. To follow this woman is to walk a downward path that leads to ruin. “Her steps take hold on hell” shows that this path grips a person firmly, pulling them toward Sheol, the place of the dead. The language is vivid: what begins as a small step becomes a strong hold that is hard to escape.

This is not only about physical death. It also means spiritual death and separation from God. The consequences of adultery can harm the body, the soul, and relationships. The verse warns that temporary pleasure leads to lasting destruction.

Biblical connections

The Bible often contrasts two paths: one leading to life and one to death. Here, the path of immorality leads downward to the grave. The Septuagint, an early Greek translation, renders the phrase as “the feet of folly,” showing that this warning is not only about one woman but about the foolishness of sin in general.

Application

This warning applies to both men and women. Any form of sexual immorality or unfaithfulness in a committed relationship follows the same downward path. The verse calls us to examine our steps and to turn away from temptations that promise pleasure but bring ruin.
