Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth, and thy labors be in the house of a stranger, Proverbs 5:10 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise teachings and practical advice for living a godly and righteous life. Proverbs 5 addresses the pitfalls of immorality and the consequences of unfaithfulness in marriage, focusing on the potential outcomes of straying from the path of faithfulness.

Guarding our wealth: The verse warns that if one departs from righteousness and faithfulness, “strangers” – those not part of one’s family or community – may end up benefiting from the wealth one has accumulated. Literally, this cautions against careless handling of finances and possessions that can lead to loss or exploitation. Metaphorically, it can refer to the loss of spiritual blessings or the waste of resources that could have been used for godly purposes.

Consequences of unfaithfulness: The passage further declares that one’s labors may end up in the house of a stranger. This implies that immoral behavior and unfaithfulness can extend beyond personal loss to affect a broader sphere of influence. It underscores the importance of faithfulness in marriage and relationships, showing that breaking commitments within the home can have far‑reaching effects on others.

Stewardship and faithfulness: The verse highlights the need to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us—not only financial resources but also time, talents, and relationships. Exercising wisdom, discretion, and faithfulness in managing these gifts honors God and helps prevent the negative consequences that arise from poor stewardship.

Application to our lives: Proverbs 5:10 reminds us to be vigilant in our faithfulness to God, our commitments, and our responsibilities. We are called to be wise and discerning in how we handle resources and relationships, prioritizing faithfulness in marriage, friendships, and other areas, and avoiding the temptation to pursue selfish desires or be enticed by worldly allure.

Overall, Proverbs 5:10 emphasizes the importance of faithfulness, stewardship, and wisdom. By remaining faithful to God and our commitments, we can avoid the potential negative outcomes that may result from unfaithfulness and poor decision‑making.
