Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad,

and rivers of waters in the streets. Proverbs 5:16 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature attributed mainly to King Solomon, offering practical advice and guidance for daily living. Proverbs chapter 5 confronts the danger of adultery and calls believers to remain faithful within marriage, emphasizing the importance of commitment and warning of the consequences of infidelity.

In verses 15‑16 the text reads, “Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.” The imagery of “fountains” and “rivers” represents the natural outflow and abundance of marital intimacy. The passage teaches that this abundance should be enjoyed within the confines of the marriage covenant, not shared publicly with strangers. The instruction that the waters be “only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee” clarifies that marital blessings are to remain exclusive to the husband and wife.

The metaphor underscores the sanctity of the marital bond. Faithfulness and commitment are presented as essential virtues; the proper enjoyment of marital intimacy is to be cherished, protected, and kept from public display or illicit pursuit. The language calls believers to honor the covenant by keeping love and affection within the marriage relationship.

Application of this teaching encourages individuals to focus on their own marriages, investing energy, affection, and gratitude into their spouse. It warns against seeking fulfillment outside the marriage and reminds believers of the blessings that flow from honoring the commitment made before God. By valuing and cultivating the marriage relationship, couples can experience joy and satisfaction within the boundaries set by Scripture.

Related Scriptures that reinforce these principles include Proverbs 5:18‑19, Proverbs 6:32‑33, Matthew 5:27‑28, and Hebrews 13:4. Studying the surrounding verses and seeking guidance from trusted spiritual mentors can deepen understanding of the biblical principles conveyed in this passage.
