Proverbs 5:19

Listen to this article

“Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament. It contains practical advice on various aspects of life, including relationships, family, work, and morality. Proverbs 5 addresses the dangers of adultery and the importance of faithfulness in marriage.

Symbolic language:The verse uses poetic and symbolic language to convey its message. The “loving hind” and “pleasant roe” are references to a beautiful and graceful female deer. These descriptions emphasize the beauty and attractiveness of the wife being spoken of here.

The sanctity of marriage:This verse highlights the importance of marital intimacy and satisfaction. It encourages husbands to find their delight and satisfaction in the love and companionship of their wives. The phrase “let her breasts satisfy thee at all times” symbolizes the intimate and exclusive nature of the marital relationship.

Faithfulness and commitment:The verse also emphasizes the idea of being “ravished always with her love.” This speaks to the depth of emotional connection and passion that should exist between husband and wife. It encourages husbands to remain captivated by the love and affection of their wives, reinforcing the importance of faithfulness and commitment in marriage.

Guarding against adultery:Proverbs 5:19 is part of a larger passage that warns against the temptations of immorality and the consequences of infidelity. The surrounding verses counsel against being enticed by the charms of adulterous women and urge men to rejoice in the wife of their youth (Proverbs 5:15-20). This verse serves as a reminder of the blessings and fulfilment found within a committed, monogamous marriage.

Application today:While the language used in this verse is poetic and culturally specific, its underlying principles remain relevant today. It encourages husbands to cherish and honour their wives, cultivating a strong emotional and physical bond within marriage. It also serves as a reminder to both husbands and wives of the importance of faithfulness, loyalty, and ongoing love in their relationship.

Remember, when studying individual verses, it is essential to consider the broader context of the passage, the cultural background, and the intended audience to gain a more comprehensive understanding.
