Proverbs 5:21

Posted on 18 May at 15:11
Listen to this article

“For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament, attributed primarily to King Solomon. It contains practical advice for living a righteous and wise life. Chapter 5 focuses on the dangers of adultery and the importance of faithfulness within the marriage relationship.

Awareness of God’s Omniscience:The verse begins by emphasizing the omniscience of the Lord. It tells us that the ways of man are “before the eyes of the LORD.” This statement highlights the fact that God is aware of everything we do. It’s a reminder that nothing is hidden from Him, and He sees and knows our every action, thought, and motive.

God’s Careful Consideration:The verse continues, saying that God “pondereth all his goings.” This phrase conveys the idea that God carefully examines or considers all of our actions, decisions, and ways. He doesn’t merely observe in a detached manner; He actively evaluates and judges the paths we choose.

Personal Application:The message of this verse has several important implications for our lives:

  • Accountability:The verse reminds us that we are accountable to God for our actions. Since God sees and ponders our ways, we cannot hide anything from Him. This should serve as a reminder to live with integrity, recognising that we will ultimately answer to God for our choices.
  • Divine Guidance:Knowing that God carefully considers our goings should also encourage us to seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives. When we acknowledge that He sees the bigger picture and understands the consequences of our choices, we can trust Him to lead us on the right path.
  • Fear of the Lord:This verse can foster a healthy fear of the Lord. Recognising God’s omniscience and His careful evaluation of our ways should instil reverence and awe in our hearts. It reminds us to live in a manner that pleases Him and aligns with His will.
