Proverbs 6:12

Posted on 18 May at 15:11
Listen to this article

“A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature in the Bible, attributed primarily to King Solomon. These proverbs offer practical advice for living a righteous and successful life based on the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 6:12 is a concise statement warning against the character of a wicked and deceitful individual.

Analysis:a) “A naughty person”: The term “naughty” in this context refers to someone who is wicked, morally corrupt, or perverse. It describes an individual who habitually engages in sinful behavior.

b) “A wicked man”: This phrase refers to a person who acts in a morally evil or sinful manner. Such an individual is characterized by a pattern of unrighteousness and rebellion against God’s commandments.

c) “Walketh with a froward mouth”: The phrase “walketh” symbolizes one’s way of life or conduct. “Froward” means perverse, deceitful, or crooked. The “mouth” represents speech and communication. This phrase suggests that the person being described habitually speaks in a manner that is dishonest, manipulative, or wicked.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Warning against wicked companionship:The verse cautions against associating with wicked individuals who possess a deceitful and perverse nature. The people we surround ourselves with can significantly influence our behavior and character. Walking closely with those who engage in sinful speech and actions can lead us astray from God’s ways and bring negative consequences.
  • Importance of guarding our speech:The reference to the “froward mouth” highlights the significance of our words. As believers, we are called to speak truth, encouragement, and edification. This verse reminds us to be mindful of our speech, avoiding dishonesty, slander, and any form of communication that can cause harm or lead others into sin.

The danger of unchecked wickedness: The verse underscores the destructive nature of wickedness. Sin, if left unchecked, can permeate every aspect of our lives and lead us away from the path of righteousness. It serves as a reminder to examine our hearts and repent of any sinful attitudes or behaviors, seeking God’s forgiveness and transformation.

Application:

  • Choose godly companionship:Surround yourself with individuals who uphold godly values, exhibit integrity, and encourage spiritual growth. Seek fellowship with fellow believers who will influence you positively and help you grow in your relationship with God.
  • Watch your words:Be intentional about the words you speak, ensuring they align with biblical principles. Let your speech reflect honesty, kindness, and grace. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you guard your tongue and use your words to build up others.
  • Pursue righteousness:Regularly examine your heart and actions, seeking to align them with God’s Word. Cultivate a lifestyle of righteousness by embracing God’s commands and relying on His grace for transformation. Strive to live in obedience to Him, recognizing the dangers of allowing wickedness to take root in your life.

Remember, Proverbs is a collection of general principles, and individual verses should be understood in the context of the broader biblical message. Consider studying the surrounding verses and consulting reliable biblical commentaries for further insights.
