Proverbs 6:13

Posted on 18 May at 15:11

“He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Bible, attributed mainly to King Solomon. It contains practical teachings on various aspects of life, offering guidance on relationships, work, money, and moral conduct. Proverbs 6:13 is part of a section that warns against the ways of a wicked person.

Symbolic Language:Proverbs often uses vivid imagery and symbolic language to convey its message. In this verse, three body parts are mentioned: the eyes, feet, and fingers. These body parts are used metaphorically to describe the actions of a wicked person.

Winking with the Eyes:“Winketh with his eyes” refers to the actions of someone who uses deceit and trickery. Winking can be a subtle sign of scheming or plotting, indicating a person’s intention to deceive or mislead others.

Speaking with the Feet:“Speaketh with his feet” implies that a wicked person communicates through their actions. Their behavior or movements convey messages, often negative or harmful ones. This highlights the importance of observing someone’s conduct to understand their true character.

Teaching with the Fingers:“He teacheth with his fingers” suggests that a wicked person imparts knowledge or instruction that is detrimental or misleading. It represents the act of promoting or encouraging wrongdoing, using gestures or actions to convey harmful ideas or practices.

Overall Message:Proverbs 6:13 emphasizes the deceptive nature of the wicked. The verse warns against those who use cunning gestures, actions, and words to mislead, harm, or corrupt others. It encourages readers to be discerning and cautious, paying attention to people’s behavior and considering their intentions.

  • Application:As we reflect on this verse, we can draw several practical lessons. Firstly, it reminds us to be wary of those who employ deceitful tactics or engage in manipulative behaviour. We should be discerning and wise, seeking truth and avoiding association with those who seek to deceive.

Secondly, the verse underscores the importance of integrity in our own lives. We should strive to align our actions, words, and gestures with godly principles. By doing so, we can become positive influences, teaching and guiding others in a manner that promotes righteousness and uprightness.

Lastly, this verse encourages us to cultivate discernment and wisdom, as appearances can often be deceptive. By observing people’s actions and considering their motives, we can better understand their character and make informed judgments.

In summary, Proverbs 6:13 serves as a cautionary reminder to be vigilant, discerning, and upright in our interactions with others. It warns against the deceptive ways of the wicked and encourages us to walk in integrity, teaching and guiding others in righteousness.
