Proverbs 6:14
Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
Proverbs 6:14 (KJV)
Context
Proverbs is wisdom literature in the Old Testament, giving practical instruction for righteous living. Proverbs 6:14 belongs to a larger passage, Proverbs 6:12-19, that warns against the character and actions of a wicked person. The surrounding verses describe how such a person communicates deceitfully, and verse 14 exposes the inner corruption that drives that behavior.
Meaning
The word “frowardness” means perversity, crookedness, or a stubborn inclination to do evil. It describes a heart that resists goodness and truth. In the Bible, the heart is the core of a person, including thoughts, emotions, and will. This verse shows that the wicked person’s problem is not a single mistake but a deliberate and ongoing pattern. He devises mischief continually, meaning he plots and plans to cause harm. This is not accidental; it is his consistent way of life. The result is that he sows discord, intentionally creating conflict and division among people.
Biblical connections
The next verse, Proverbs 6:15, warns that calamity will come suddenly upon such a person, and he will be broken without remedy. This passage also connects to the list of seven things the Lord hates in Proverbs 6:16-19, which includes a heart that devises wicked plans and one who sows discord among brothers. These connections show that God takes such behavior seriously and will judge it.
Application
This verse calls us to examine our own hearts. We must avoid allowing perversity or deceit to take root. Instead, we should cultivate hearts that are open to God’s guidance and aligned with His truth. We must also shun mischief, refusing to plot harm against others, and instead pursue kindness and compassion. Furthermore, we are to promote harmony. By highlighting the wicked person’s sowing of discord, the verse emphasizes the importance of being peacemakers and bridge builders, working to resolve conflicts and encourage reconciliation.
Avoiding perversity: Resist the temptation to harbor malicious thoughts or engage in evil deeds.
Shunning mischief: Refrain from intentionally causing harm or trouble; actively build up others.
Promoting harmony: Strive for unity and peace in relationships and communities, following God’s call to be peacemakers.
Reflection
This verse also reminds us of the spiritual battle we face. The enemy seeks to bring division and chaos into our lives and faith communities. Therefore, we must be vigilant and guard against such schemes. Let us ask God to search our hearts and remove any frowardness, so that we may be instruments of peace and unity rather than discord.
