Proverbs 6:16

These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

Proverbs 6:16 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed to King Solomon, known for his wisdom. In this verse, Solomon uses a Hebrew poetic device: “six things… yea, seven.” This is not a contradiction but a numerical pattern that builds to a climax, emphasizing the seriousness of the final item in the list. The phrase “abomination unto him” shows that these behaviors are not merely disliked but are deeply detestable to God, contrary to His nature, will, and law.

The verse introduces a list of seven things the Lord hates. Each item describes a specific sin that reflects a heart opposed to God.

  • A proud look: God despises pride and arrogance. Pride is the root of many sins and hinders humility, which is essential for a proper relationship with God and others.

  • A lying tongue: God values truthfulness and despises falsehood. Lying goes against God’s nature and character.

  • Hands that shed innocent blood: God is the giver and sustainer of life. Taking the life of an innocent person is a grave sin in His eyes.

  • A heart that devises wicked imaginations: God examines the intentions and motivations of our hearts. He detests those who plan and scheme evil against others.

  • Feet that are swift in running to mischief: God dislikes those who eagerly rush into sinful actions, seeking to cause harm or trouble.

  • A false witness who speaks lies: God values justice and truth. Bearing false witness or giving dishonest testimony is a serious offense.

  • One who sows discord among brethren: God desires unity and love among His people. Someone who intentionally sows division, conflict, and discord among believers is an abomination to Him.

The list that follows in Proverbs 6:17-19 expands on these seven items, showing that they are all found in the character of a wicked person, as described in the preceding context of Proverbs 6. The verse serves as a warning and instruction, highlighting behaviors that are detestable to God and that believers must avoid.

We should strive to cultivate humility in our lives, avoiding pride and arrogance. We must be people of integrity, speaking the truth and avoiding deceit and lies. We should respect and protect the sanctity of human life, treating others with love and compassion. Our thoughts and intentions should be pure and focused on what is good and pleasing to God. We must refrain from rushing into mischief or participating in activities that harm others. We should always speak truthfully and avoid spreading falsehoods or giving false testimony. Instead of causing division, we should work towards fostering unity, peace, and love within the body of Christ.

It is important to remember that these verses highlight behaviors that are displeasing to God. As believers, we are called to love and strive for righteousness, relying on the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit to transform us.
