Proverbs 6:19

Posted on 18 May at 15:11

“A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”

Proverbs 6:19 (KJV):This verse is a part of a passage in Proverbs 6:16-19 that describes seven things that the Lord hates. Each of these seven things represents attitudes or actions that are contrary to God’s will and bring harm to individuals and communities. Let’s break down the verse to understand its meaning and significance.

“A false witness that speaketh lies”:

This phrase refers to someone who testifies falsely or bears false witness against another person. In biblical times, the testimony of witnesses played a vital role in the justice system. False witnesses undermined the pursuit of justice by spreading lies and deception. This act is condemned because it leads to the condemnation of the innocent and the acquittal of the guilty. God values truthfulness and justice, so those who spread falsehoods are detestable in His sight.

“He that soweth discord among brethren”:

This part of the verse warns against those who intentionally sow division and strife among people, particularly among brothers or within a community. Discord disrupts unity, harmony, and love among individuals. God desires His people to live in peace, love, and unity, so those who deliberately cause division among believers or promote disharmony are condemned.

Together, this verse warns against two destructive behaviours: bearing false witness and sowing discord. These actions have the potential to cause immense harm to individuals, relationships, and communities.

As a whole, Proverbs 6:19 teaches us the importance of truthfulness, integrity, and promoting harmony among believers. It calls us to value honesty and avoid spreading lies or engaging in activities that breed discord. Instead, we are encouraged to pursue peace, speak truth, and foster unity among fellow believers.

This verse also reminds us of the character of God, who is the epitome of truth, justice, and love. By aligning our lives with these values, we honour Him and contribute to a healthier and more righteous society.

Overall, Proverbs 6:19 serves as a timeless reminder of the importance of truth, justice, and unity in our interactions with others, encouraging us to avoid falsehood and divisiveness.
