Proverbs 6:18

An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

Proverbs 6:18 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament, traditionally linked to King Solomon. It gives practical guidance for righteous living. In Proverbs 6, the writer lists several behaviours that the Lord hates, and this verse is part of that list. The verse names two connected sins: a heart that plans evil and feet that hurry to do it.

In Hebrew thought, the heart is the centre of a person’s moral and intellectual life. It holds thoughts, desires, and intentions. The phrase “wicked imaginations” means deliberately forming evil schemes or plans. This is not a passing temptation but a purposeful shaping of wrong ideas.

The second phrase, “feet that be swift in running to mischief,” describes eagerness and speed in carrying out evil. Such a person does not hesitate or consider consequences. The verse shows that sin begins in the heart and then moves to action. The heart’s wicked plans are the root, and the swift feet are the fruit. God hates both the evil deed and the evil intention behind it.

This warning agrees with other Scriptures. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard the heart because it is the source of life. Psalm 51:10 asks God to create a clean heart, showing that a changed heart is needed. In Christian understanding, a transformed heart comes through the Holy Spirit’s work of regeneration. The verse calls us to align both heart and feet with God’s will.

This verse encourages us to examine our inner thoughts and motives, not just our outward behaviour. We should be quick to flee temptation and pursue righteousness, just as the wicked are quick to run to mischief. To guard our hearts, we need God’s help through prayer, His Word, and the Holy Spirit’s power. We can confess evil thoughts and ask God to purify our desires.

  • Seeking God’s help: By studying Scripture and praying, we develop a heart that desires what pleases Him. Through the Holy Spirit, we can resist temptation and choose to live a life that honours God.

Consider your own heart. Are there evil plans or intentions you have allowed to grow? Ask God to search your heart and create in you a clean heart. Let your feet be swift in doing good, not in running to mischief.
