Proverbs 6:17

Posted on 18 May at 15:11
Listen to this article

“Proverbs 6:17 (KJV): These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom sayings and teachings attributed primarily to King Solomon, who was known for his God-given wisdom. Proverbs is filled with practical guidance for righteous living and the pursuit of wisdom. In this particular passage, the writer highlights seven things that are particularly abhorrent to the Lord.

The Numbering:The mention of six things and then seven may seem peculiar, but it’s a literary device used to emphasize the importance of the final item. By listing six things and then adding a seventh, the writer draws attention to the climax of the list.

The List of Detestable Things:The specific sins or actions mentioned in this verse are not listed directly in Proverbs 6:17. However, they are mentioned in the subsequent verses (Proverbs 6:18-19), which provide a clear elaboration:

  • a) “A proud look” – Refers to a haughty or arrogant attitude, thinking highly of oneself to the point of looking down on others.
  • b) “A lying tongue” – Denotes speaking falsehood or deceit, intentionally deceiving others with dishonesty.
  • c) “Hands that shed innocent blood” – Refers to the act of murder, particularly the taking of innocent lives.
  • d) “A heart that deviseth wicked imaginations” – Refers to a heart that continually conceives evil plans and schemes, harboring wickedness within.
  • e) “Feet that be swift in running to mischief” – Signifies a person who eagerly rushes towards wrongdoing, eagerly seeking out opportunities to engage in mischief or evil actions.
  • f) “A false witness that speaketh lies” – Relates to giving false testimony or bearing false witness against someone, particularly in a legal or judicial setting.
  • g) “He that soweth discord among brethren” – Refers to someone who intentionally causes division, strife, and conflicts among people, especially within a community or family.

God’s Displeasure:The verse makes it clear that the Lord hates these actions. The Hebrew word for “hate” used here denotes intense hostility and abhorrence. These actions are contrary to God’s nature, character, and desire for His people. They are also detrimental to human relationships and go against the principles of righteousness and love.

Moral Instruction:The purpose of listing these abominable actions is to provide moral instruction and guidance to the readers. By identifying what God hates, the passage encourages readers to avoid these actions and cultivate virtues that align with God’s character, such as humility, truthfulness, love, and unity.

Application:As believers, we can reflect on this verse and examine our own lives. We should strive to avoid the detestable actions mentioned and instead cultivate virtues that honor God and contribute to healthy relationships within our communities. This passage serves as a reminder that our actions matter to God, and He desires us to live in a way that reflects His love, righteousness, and wisdom.
