Listen to this article

“My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:”

Context:The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and instructions primarily written by King Solomon. It offers practical wisdom for daily living, addressing various aspects of life, including family relationships, work ethics, and moral conduct. Proverbs 6:20 emphasises the importance of honouring and obeying parental guidance.

Addressing “My Son”:The phrase “My son” is a common motif used in Proverbs to depict the fatherly instruction and wisdom being passed down. It implies that the advice given in this verse is intended for young people, urging them to pay attention and heed their parents’ teachings.

Keeping Father’s Commandment:“Keep thy father’s commandment” refers to obeying the instructions and guidance given by one’s father. It highlights the significance of respecting parental authority and recognising the value of their advice. This instruction extends beyond mere obedience to a deeper understanding of the wisdom and guidance imparted by fathers.

Forsaking Mother’s Law:“Forsake not the law of thy mother” emphasises the importance of not disregarding the teachings and principles taught by one’s mother. This verse acknowledges the unique role that mothers play in the upbringing and moral development of their children. It encourages individuals to value and hold onto the moral and ethical teachings they have received from their mothers.

The Balance of Parental Guidance:The verse highlights the balanced approach to parental guidance, recognising the contributions and authority of both fathers and mothers. It underscores the importance of valuing the wisdom and instruction imparted by both parents, as they bring different perspectives and experiences to a child’s upbringing.

Practical Application:The instruction in this verse applies to individuals in their relationships with their parents. It encourages children and young people to show respect, honour, and obedience to their parents’ teachings. It also emphasises the long-lasting value of the moral and ethical principles instilled by parents.

  • Spiritual Application:While this verse primarily addresses the parent-child relationship, it also points to the broader concept of honouring authority and heeding wise counsel. As believers, we are called to honour God as our ultimate Father and obey His commandments. The principles of respecting and valuing parental authority can be extended to recognising and following God’s guidance in our lives.
