Proverbs 6:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

Binde them continually vpon thine heart, and tie them about thy necke. Proverbs 6:21 (KJV)

Bind them continually upon thine heart,

and tie them about thy neck. Proverbs 6:21 (KJV)

Proverbs belongs to the wisdom literature of Scripture, traditionally linked to King Solomon. This particular verse belongs to a passage that stresses the necessity of holding fast to moral instruction and godly wisdom. The language is symbolic: binding mercy and truth about the neck and inscribing them upon the heart’s “table” portrays these virtues as precious possessions that should be kept constantly before us.

The image of binding suggests that mercy and truth are to be secured as one would fasten a valuable necklace, while writing them on the heart indicates an internal, enduring presence. By treating these qualities as valuable, the author invites believers to cherish them, guard them, and allow them to shape character and decision‑making.

Such symbolism serves as a continual reminder. When mercy and truth are imagined as a necklace and as an inscription on the heart, they become ever‑present guides in thought and action. The verse therefore calls for a lifestyle in which God’s teachings are not merely heard but lived out consistently, in every circumstance.

Application flows naturally from the imagery.

Believers are encouraged to value God’s Word, letting it occupy a prominent place that influences choices. Internalizing mercy and truth involves regular meditation on Scripture, seeking to understand how each truth applies to daily life, and allowing it to mold character. Consistency is key: the virtues should govern conduct not only in special moments but in the ordinary flow of life.

A practical outworking of this principle can be a visible reminder—a piece of jewelry bearing a biblical phrase or Christian symbol—that serves as a daily prompt to uphold godly wisdom. Such tangible cues help keep mercy and truth before the eyes and the heart throughout the day.
