Proverbs 9:12

Posted on 18 May at 15:10
Listen to this article

“If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.”

Context:Proverbs 9:12 is a verse found within a larger passage in Proverbs that contrasts wisdom and folly.

In this specific verse, the emphasis is on the consequences of one’s actions and attitude.

Wisdom brings personal benefit:The verse begins with the statement, “If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself.” This highlights the idea that wisdom is something that ultimately benefits the individual who possesses it. When a person seeks wisdom and makes wise choices, it leads to personal growth, success, and a flourishing life. Wisdom allows one to navigate through challenges, make sound decisions, and live in a manner that aligns with godly principles.

Consequences of scorning wisdom:The verse continues, “but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.” Here, the focus shifts to the negative outcome of rejecting wisdom. The act of scorning wisdom refers to disregarding or rejecting it, choosing instead to follow a path of foolishness and ignorance. The consequence of such a choice is that the individual bears the burden of their own foolishness. By rejecting wisdom, one opens themselves up to the potential pitfalls and negative consequences that may result from unwise decisions.

Overall, Proverbs 9:12 highlights the significance of embracing wisdom and the personal responsibility that comes with it. It encourages individuals to seek wisdom and make wise choices for their own benefit. Conversely, it warns against scorning wisdom, reminding us that the consequences of rejecting wisdom fall squarely on the individual who disregards it.

This verse reminds us of the importance of cultivating wisdom in our lives, making choices that align with godly principles, and understanding that our actions have consequences. Seeking wisdom and living in accordance with it can lead to a more fulfilled and purposeful life, while scorning wisdom can bring about negative outcomes and unnecessary burdens.
