Proverbs 9:13

A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.

Proverbs 9:13 (KJV)

This verse sits in a chapter where wisdom and folly are pictured as two women, each calling people to her house. The wise woman has built her house and prepared a feast, while the foolish woman is loud and empty. The contrast helps readers see that every person chooses which voice to follow.

The word “clamorous” means noisy and boisterous. The foolish woman draws attention to herself, but her noise hides her emptiness. She is “simple,” which means naive and easily deceived, and she “knoweth nothing” of lasting value. Her loudness is not strength; it is a sign of her lack of discernment.

This woman represents folly itself. She is the opposite of the wise woman described earlier in the chapter. Her invitation sounds attractive, but it leads to destruction because she has no true understanding to offer.

The chapter earlier states that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). That verse gives the standard by which the foolish woman is measured. She lacks this reverent fear, so her knowledge is worthless. The personification of folly as a woman is a literary device; the warning applies to all people, not only to women.

Foolishness is often loud and attention-grabbing, yet it is empty. We should learn to recognize voices that are noisy but lack substance. We can ask God for discernment to tell the difference between confident speech and true wisdom.

  • Discernment: Test what you hear by comparing it with God’s Word and wise counsel.

  • Pursuit of wisdom: Seek wisdom that begins with the fear of the Lord, not just human cleverness.

  • Character evaluation: Examine your own words and actions. Do they reflect understanding, or are they merely loud?

This verse calls us to value quiet wisdom over noisy folly. It reminds us that true knowledge is humble and rooted in God. Let us choose the path of wisdom, which leads to life, and turn away from the empty noise of foolishness.
