Proverbs 9:14
For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
Proverbs 9:14 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to a passage that contrasts two invitations. Wisdom has built her house, prepared a feast, and calls the simple to gain understanding (Proverbs 9:1-6). Folly, described as loud and ignorant, also takes a public place. She sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city. In ancient Israel, the city gate and high places were where people gathered for business and judgment. By choosing this spot, Folly makes herself visible and influential, imitating Wisdom’s public call.
Meaning
The door of her house shows that Folly is easy to reach. She does not go out to search for victims; she waits for passersby to come near. The Hebrew word for “seat” can mean a throne or a place of honor. She presents herself with an air of authority, even though her message is empty. The “high places” may also suggest elevation, but here the main point is prominence. Folly looks important, but her words lead to death. Her posture is one of lazy presumption; she sits and waits to lure the simple, rather than seeking them with honest purpose.
Biblical connections
The contrast with Wisdom is sharp. Wisdom builds and prepares a feast; Folly sits and waits. Wisdom speaks truth; Folly offers stolen pleasures. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10), but Folly ignores this foundation. Her promise of easy gain is a trap. This verse warns that not everyone who speaks from a place of honor tells the truth. In the ancient Near East, such prominent positions were where legal and social matters were settled, so her presence there mimics legitimate authority.
Application
Believers must test what they hear against God’s Word. A person may appear wise or important, yet their teaching may lead away from the Lord. Folly’s appeal is often public and attractive, promising quick satisfaction. Discernment requires patience and a heart that fears God. Before following any voice, ask whether it agrees with Scripture and leads to life. Be wary of those who claim authority but whose message does not honor the Lord.
Reflection
Where do we look for guidance? The world offers many seats of honor, but only Wisdom builds on the fear of the Lord. Folly sits at the door, ready to lure the careless. May we choose the feast of Wisdom, not the stolen bread of Folly.
