Proverbs 9:1

Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:

Context

Proverbs is wisdom literature in the Old Testament, attributed to King Solomon. The book gives practical guidance for righteous living. Proverbs 9 contrasts two invitations: Wisdom calls people to her feast, while Folly calls them to her own path. This verse opens that contrast by showing Wisdom as a woman who has prepared her house.

Meaning

Wisdom is personified as a woman who builds her own house. In ancient Israel, building a house was a sign of stability and permanence. The house represents the life and character that wisdom forms in a person. It is not a physical building but a secure way of living that God approves.

Wisdom has “hewn out her seven pillars.” Hewing means cutting and shaping stone with skill and effort. This was deliberate, careful work, not hasty or accidental. The number seven often means completeness or fullness in Scripture. So the seven pillars suggest that wisdom’s foundation is complete and sufficient for every part of life.

The pillars may stand for qualities such as knowledge, understanding, discretion, righteousness, prudence, integrity, and the fear of the Lord. Together they support a life that is stable and well-ordered. Just as pillars hold up a roof, these principles hold up a godly life.

Biblical connections

In the New Testament, Christ is called the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24). The image of Wisdom preparing a house also points to Christ, who prepares a place for His people (John 14:2-3). This connection shows that true wisdom is not abstract; it is found in a relationship with Jesus.

Application

Proverbs 9:1 urges us to build our lives on wisdom. A house with strong pillars can withstand storms; a life built on godly principles can endure trials. Wisdom’s house is open, but we must respond to her invitation. Entering her house means turning from foolish ways and embracing the fear of the Lord. When we do, we find security and stability that the world cannot give.
