Listen to this article

“He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke.”

Context:Psalm 104 is a beautiful hymn of praise to God for His creation and His sustaining power over all things. It celebrates God as the Creator and Sustainer of the world, acknowledging His sovereignty and majesty.

Key Points:

  • God’s Sovereign Power:The verse begins by emphasising God’s absolute power and authority over the earth. When He looks upon the earth, it trembles. This highlights His divine control and the awe-inspiring impact of His presence.
  • Creation Responds to God:The verse continues by stating that when God touches the hills, they smoke. This imagery depicts the extraordinary power of God that causes even the elements of nature to respond. It signifies the dynamic interaction between the Creator and His creation.
  • God’s Intimate Involvement:The verse emphasises that God is not a distant or disinterested deity. Rather, He actively engages with His creation. His mere gaze or touch can bring about remarkable effects, demonstrating His intimacy and involvement in the world He has made.
  • Reverence and Awe:The imagery of the earth trembling and the hills smoking serves as a reminder of the majesty and might of God. It invites us to approach Him with reverence and awe, recognising His greatness and the significance of His presence.

Application:This verse reminds us of the power and sovereignty of God. It calls us to acknowledge His authority over all creation and respond with awe, reverence, and worship. It also encourages us to trust in His power and rely on Him for guidance, provision, and protection.

  • Overall, Psalm 104:32 underscores the magnificent power and involvement of God in His creation. It invites us to marvel at His sovereignty and respond with worship and reverence.
