Psalms 106:5
“That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance.”
1. Context:The book of Psalms is a collection of prayers, praises, and expressions of faith. Psalm 106 is a historical psalm that recounts the history of Israel and God’s faithfulness despite the people’s disobedience and rebellion.
The psalmist desires to see the good of God’s chosen people. In the context of this psalm, the chosen people refer to the nation of Israel. As believers today, we can also apply this verse to ourselves as part of God’s chosen people through faith in Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:9). We should have a desire to see and experience the goodness of God in our lives and in the lives of our fellow believers.
The psalmist longs to rejoice in the gladness of God’s nation. In the Old Testament, this referred to the joy experienced by the Israelites as they saw God’s blessings and deliverance. For us as believers today, it can represent the joy and gladness we experience as part of the community of faith, the Church. We are called to rejoice with other believers and share in their joys and victories (Romans 12:15; 1 Corinthians 12:26).
The psalmist expresses a desire to glory with God’s inheritance. In the Old Testament, the inheritance primarily referred to the land of Canaan that God promised to give to the Israelites. However, in the New Testament, our inheritance is in Christ (Ephesians 1:11, 14). As believers, we can rejoice and boast in our inheritance of eternal life, salvation, and the blessings that come through our relationship with Jesus Christ.
Key Takeaways:
- We should desire to see the good of God’s chosen people and experience His goodness in our own lives.
- Rejoicing in the gladness of God’s nation can be understood as celebrating and sharing in the joy of fellow believers.
- We can glory in our inheritance as believers, which includes the blessings of salvation and eternal life in Christ.
